Kaiviertel district in Salzburg Old Town

One of the oldest districts of the city of Salzburg

The picturesque Kaiviertel district lies between the emerald River Salzach and the picturesque Moenchsberg Mountain with the impressive Hohensalzburg Castle atop. 33 Kaigasse Alley is the premier address for your holidays in Salzburg Old Town.

The German word ‘Kai’ translates as embankment. A long time ago the people of Salzburg tried to stop the river from eroding the river banks by placing a wickerwork of interwoven twigs along the river bank. This protective wall was called ‘Gehai’ – which later turned into ‘Kai’.

The history of the Kaiviertel district in Salzburg Old Town

The Kaiviertel district emerged along a former main road leading from the cathedral to Berchtesgaden in neighbouring Bavaria. The mansions of the capitulars, then high ranking civil servants, were located along Kaigasse Alley. Long before the capitulars erected their beautiful mansions a Roman temple dedicated to the deities Asclepios, Hygieia and Kybele was located in the Kaiviertel district. The last remnants of the Roman walls can still be seen in the ‘Roemersaal’ theatre at the Mozartkino Cinema.

Picturesque squares, bars and restaurants in Salzburg Old Town

A statue of Papageno – the famous bird catcher from the opera ‘The Magic Flute’ – in Papagenoplatz Square is a reminder of the most famous son of Salzburg, Mozart. The charming Zirkelwirt tavern on the idyllic square has satisfied the needs of hungry and thirsty travellers since 1647. The beautiful guest garden and the rustic parlours are ideal places to let the last hours of the day fade away after an exciting time exploring Salzburg Old Town. As a guest at the Hotel Kasererbraeu you do not even have to leave the house if you feel a little hungry. Next to the staircases of the hotel a hallway leads to one of the best Italian restaurants in Salzburg’s Old Town. Or would you prefer a shopping tour to the boutiques and bars in Kajetanerplatz Square?
