Historic Mozartkino Cinema in Salzburg

One of the oldest cinemas in the world at your Salzburg hotel

The first moving pictures flickered over the screen of the Mozartkino Cinema in Salzburg in 1904. It counts among the oldest existing cinemas in the world and has long become a part of film history itself.

In a dining hall of the Hotel Kasererbraeu of today, the people of Salzburg gathered to marvel at the moving pictures shown by Franz Xaver Fried on his ‘Original Electro Biographer’ in 1904. In 1918 the Mozartkino Cinema was integrated into the Kasererbraeu brewery and tavern. During World War II the cinema was destroyed by Allied bombings.

The premiere of ‘Sissi – The Young Empress’ at the Mozartkino Cinema in Salzburg

The Mozartkino Cinema reopened its doors on 23rd December 1950. The newly erected cinema provided seats for 540 film lovers and was equipped with the cutting-edge technology of its time. The people of Salzburg crowded into the theatres of Mozartkino Cinema for the premiere of ‘Sissi – The Young Empress’ in 1956. This was unsurprising considering that the star of the movie, Romy Schneider, stayed at room 323 of Hotel Kasererbraeu for the first showing of the legendary film. The hand-painted bed in which ‘Sissi’ slept can still be found in the very same room. Luis Trenker, well-known for his mountain films, came to the cinema in Salzburg for the premiere of one of his films in 1962. Numerous other stars of German-speaking cinema have enjoyed the amenities of the Hotel Kasererbraeu:

  • Maria Schell
  • Atilla Hörbiger
  • Joe Stöckl
  • Toni Sailer

...to just name a few.
