Salzburg Carillon
The bells chime so sweetly in Salzburg during the holiday season…
The spire of the New Residential Palace houses the famous Salzburg Carillon. Every day at 7am, 11am and 5pm sweet melodies waft over Mozartplatz Square and Residenzplatz Square from the bell tower.
Prince Archbishop Johann Ernst Graf Thun bought 35 bells from the bell founder Melchior de Haze of Antwerp in 1695. Since 1704 the Salzburg Carillon has chimed a choice of more than 40 musical pieces three times a day. Guided tours to the bell tower and the mechanism of the carillon are available from the end of March to the end of October on Thursdays at 5.30pm and Fridays at 10.30am. Tickets are available at the entrance of Salzburg Museum and the Panorama Museum.
The musical repertoire of the Salzburg Carillon
The 300 year old Salzburg Carillon plays melodies by Mozart and Haydn. The carillon was completely renovated in 2011. After a two year break the carillon started working again with tunes from Mozart’s ‘Magic Flute’.
In some rooms of the Hotel Kasererbraeu it is possible to listen to the sweet melodies of the Salzburg Carillon.
