The Salzburg Pfingstfestspiele 2019

22. May 2019 0

The Salzburg Pfingstfestspiele 2019 from 07th to 10th June

The festival year 2019 once again offers a great deal of musical variety and a full program that Salzburg visitors should not have missed. At Whitsun, from 7 to 10 June 2019, the Salzburg Pfingsfestspiele will take place. On these days, the city of Salzburg will once again be completely dedicated to classical music and the corresponding social hustle and bustle. There is something special in the air, and anyone strolling through the alleys of the old town can feel it.

Concept by Herbert von Karajan

A short review of the history of the Salzburg Pfingsfestspiele, which has meanwhile become an institution: Once again, it was Herbert von Karajan who gave the impetus to the post-Easter event (at that time still called “Salzburg Pfingstkonzerte”). He wanted to meet the strong demand for concerts during the Easter Festival season and offer the audience more musical enjoyment. In 1982 the time finally came, and the concerts were held by the Berliner Philharmoniker under Herbert von Karajan. In 1998, the Salzburg Whitsun Festival was a revised concept that is still valid today. The Whitsun Festival has since been artistically directed by Ricardo Muti and currently Cecilia Bartoli.

The current program

In 2019 the Salzburg Whitsun Festival will be dedicated to the theme “Voci celestial – heavenly voices.” The program thus serves to commemorate the great castrato voices of the past. The focus of the only four-day Whitsun Festival is the new production of the opera “Alcina” by Georg Friedrich Händel with Cecilia Bartoli herself in the title role. For the first time since 1735, the audience can experience Handel’s opera in direct comparison with Nicola Porpora’s competitor “Polifemo.” We have summarized the highlights of Pentecost for you:
