The "Sommerfestspiele" in Salzburg

When Salzburg becomes a stage

Every year since 1920, thousands of art and culture lovers from all over the world have responded to the call of the Salzburg Festival. Performances in the opera, drama and concert sections shine with star casts and an impressive backdrop.

If you open your room window at the Altstadthotel Kasererbräu on a July or August evening, you might hear it: the “Jeeeedermann!” from Domplatz, which is only a three-minute walk from the 4-star hotel. Every year in the summer months, the “Jedermann!” shouts echo across the Domplatz: it’s festival time – the fifth season in Salzburg.

Everyone needs stars

& the stars the everyman

Hugo von Hofmannsthal’s play has lost none of its fascination since its premiere on August 22, 1920. This is due in no small part to the star-studded cast that the play boasts every year: Veronica Ferres, Senta Berger, Maximilian Schell, Peter Simonischek, Ben Becker … – the list of stars who once took part in Jedermann is long. Christian Stückl, who reworked Jedermann for the festival in 2001, made the Altstadthotel his domicile during the festival. Anyone who wants to experience the play live in front of the cathedral backdrop must be quick: The tickets are very much in demand.

Salzburg at festival time

A fascinating synthesis of the arts

Stars are not only to be admired on stage at the Salzburg Festival. Regular guests such as Thomas Gottschalk, Bianca Jagger, Caroline von Monaco, Ernst August von Hannover and prominent surprise visitors join the audience of festival guests. Max Reinhardt, founder of the Salzburg Festival alongside Hofmannsthal, once said, “The whole city is a stage.” A small flurry of flashbulbs at festival time is not uncommon in the alleys of Salzburg’s old town. Salzburg’s baroque old town is also the perfect backdrop for your vacation photos.

Cultural treat

Against an impressive backdrop

In addition to the open-air performance of Jedermann on Cathedral Square, the Salzburg Festival impresses with other brilliant plays, operas and concerts in front of distinctive venues such as the Felsenreitschule, Haus für Mozart or the Großes Festspielhaus.
