Do you want some fresh air? Salzburg enchants visitors and locals with numerous outdoor activities. Whether picturesque hiking trails, fascinating mountain panoramas or mighty waterfalls: In Salzburger Land, you can enjoy nature, recharge your batteries and unwind. Today we present you 5 unforgettable excursion destinations in Salzburg and surroundings. Have fun!

Krimmler Wasserfälle (Waterfalls)

Experience the irrepressible power of water. Die Krimmler Waterfalls The Krimmer waterfalls are a highlight in the Salzburger Land – and with a height of 380 meters the largest waterfalls in Europe (and the fifth highest waterfalls in the world!). The waterfalls start in the Krimmlere Aschetal and fall down in three spectacular steps. The highest point of the waterfall is 1470 meters above sea level!

It’s a magnificent natural spectacle. Especially practical: Thanks to a hiking trail with many viewpoints you can experience the waterfalls up close. The Krimmler Waterfalls fascinate almost 400,000 visitors every year. We also have an obvious excursion recommendation for you!

Nationalpark Berchtesgaden

The Nationalpark Berchtesgaden offers pure nature. Only 30 minutes away from Salzburg not only high mountains, fantastic valleys and beautiful hiking trails await you – the Königssee also attracts visitors from all over the world. Between steep rock faces, you can explore the crystal clear lake by boat.

The boat trip takes you past the famous Echo of Lake Königssee and lasts about half an hour. Those who leave the board at the Salet terminus will enjoy a magnificent panorama after a 15-minute walk: the peaceful Obersee reflects the impressive Hagengebirge mountains – while the Röthbach waterfall crashes down from 400 meters above sea level. It couldn’t be more picturesque!

You want to escape the hectic city life? But you don’t want to go on a big trip? Then the Kapuzinerberg is an excellent choice! The city hill is located east of the Salzach, rises 200 meters above the city and boasts excellent hiking trails.

On the way up there are also 13 chapels that you can visit. Once you reach the top, you will have a fantastic view – especially if you walk along the Bastei path outside the city walls. Includes a panoramic view of Hohensalzburg Fortress and the city of Mozart. Breathtaking!

Whether in winter or summer: The Gaisberg is a paradise for hikers, nature lovers and recreational athletes. The mountain is only 12 kilometers away from Salzburg and impresses with its many hiking trails and activities.
In summer you can go mountain biking, hiking or take off with a paraglider. In winter, the Gaisberg transforms into a fairytale winter landscape – and is then perfect for ski tours or cross-country skiing. On top of that, there is – once again – a fabulous panorama. On a clear day, you can see all the way to the Großglockner!

Suggest: The Gaisberg circular hiking trail is a popular hike. It runs once around the whole mountain and is 5 kilometers long. For those who prefer a shorter walk, the Zistelrunde is the best option.

Großglockner High Alpine Road

Up to the highest mountain in Austria! The Großglockner High Alpine Road should not be missing in any list of excursions in the Salzburger Land. If you take the 48-kilometer long road, you’ll be amazed for sure: a unique mountain world and breathtaking nature will delight every visitor.

You drive past colorful alpine meadows, dense mountain forests, and impressive rocky landscapes. The “Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe” also offers an excellent view of the Pasterze, the longest glacier in the Eastern Alps. And if you’re lucky, you might even spot a few ibex. We wish you lots of fun and a fabulous trip!
