For modern art in Salzburg
In three and a half years of construction, a museum was created that offers the greatest possible variability for the most diverse exhibition formats on four levels. Located in a prominent position on the Mönchsberg, above the roofs of the old town, the new building, built by the Munich-based architect team Friedrich Hoff and Zwink and opened in 2004, presents contemporary and modern art in one of the most beautiful places in Salzburg. The architecturally puristic building offers on an area of 2300 sqm the best setting for exhibitions of the art of the 20. and 21st century. Art of international format as well as works from the museum’s own collection are shown in temporary exhibitions on three levels.
In 1998, an international architectural competition was announced for the construction of a new museum on the Mönchsberg. An eleven-member jury chaired by Swiss architect Luigi Snozzi selected the project by Munich-based architects Friedrich Hoff Zwink from 145 submissions. The sensitive reference of the design to the striking appearance of the 19th century water tower was particularly decisive for the choice. The glazed staircases open up the view of the historic building.

Theme exhibitions with internationally renowned artists
In recent years, the Museum der Moderne Salzburg has organized groundbreaking work shows and thematic exhibitions with internationally renowned artists, such as. E.A.T. Experiments in Art and Technology, Carolee Schneemann. Kinetic Painting,Unbuilt Salzburg, Andrea Fraser, Isa Genzken, In Dialogue: Viennese Actionism and Anna Mendieta, Traces.
The entire exterior was clad in local Untersberg marble and articulated by vertical joints.
