The white fortress has been enthroned above the roofs of the city on the Salzach River since 1077. It is the largest completely preserved castle in Central Europe. The reason for its construction was the dispute between the pope and the king – the Investiture Controversy. Archbishop Gebhart of Salzburg sided with the pope. To protect himself against King Henry IV, Archbishop Gebhart of Salzburg had the fortress of Hohensalzburg built.

The Hohensalzburg Fortress
At 15. and 16th century
During the peasant uprisings, in the turmoil of the Thirty Years’ War, the archbishops of Salzburg retreated to the fortress of Hohensalzburg. Gradually they enlarged the fortress and created its current appearance. Kasererbräu – the 4 star hotel in the middle of the old town directly under the Hohensalzburg Fortress.
You can comfortably reach the Hohensalzburg Fortress in about 10 minutes by taking the fortress train. The station of the fortress railroad is located in the Festungsgasse, a side street of the Kapitelplatz.
