The Kaiviertel in Salzburg

One of the oldest quarters of Salzburg

The Kaiviertel is located between Mozartplatz and Kajetanerplatz, between the Salzach River and Hohensalzburg Fortress. Here, Kaigasse number 33 in the Kaiviertel is the first address for your Salzburg vacation.

In the past, people tried to prevent the water of the Salzach from washing out the banks with a wickerwork made of brushwood. This protective wall made of brushwood was called “Gehai” at that time. The name Kaigasse was derived from the name of the bank protection structures (“Kai”).

The Kaiviertel itself developed along the former main street that led from Domplatz to Berchtesgaden. Where once the Romans built their temples and later there were the courts of the canons and the officials of Salzburg at that time, there stands today – hundreds of years later – the historic Old Town Hotel Kasererbräu directly in the strolling area, surrounded by countless stores and the most famous sights of Salzburg’s Old Town.

Between the Kai and Krotach streets once stood the temple dedicated to the gods Asclepios, Hygieia and Kybele. You can admire the last preserved wall of the Roman structure in the Roman Hall of the Mozart Cinema.

Places and pubs in the Kaiviertel

Attention Mozart fans! At Papagenoplatz – just a few minutes away from the Altstadthotel Kasererbräu – you will find a fountain with the figure of Papageno, the bird catcher from Mozart’s famous opera “The Magic Flute”. The Zirkelwirt pub has been located here since 1647. In summer, the guest garden of the rustic restaurant is an ideal place to end the day. Only two houses away from the 4 star hotel is the city café Balthazar. This is where the people of Salzburg meet for an after work “Stehachterl”. As a guest at the Altstadthotel Kasererbräu, you don’t even have to leave your vacation home to enjoy a delicious meal: Directly to the left of the hotel’s staircase, a small corridor leads to one of Salzburg’s best Italian restaurants. On Kajetanerplatz there are more pubs and small, individual boutiques and stores.
