Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Musical genius and famous son of the city of Salzburg

No one left their traces in the city of Salzburg like Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Even 200 years after his death the musical genius is still very much alive in the town of his birth.

On January 27th 1756 Mozart was born as the son of a musician at the court of the prince archbishop, Leopold Mozart. His musical talent was discovered early in life. The violin on which little Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart used to practise is on display at 9 Getreidegasse Alley. In addition to the violin, letters and paintings belonging to the Mozart Family are presented at the museum.

Mozart's Residence on Makartplatz Mozart's Residence on Makartplatz Approximately 10 minutes on foot from Mozart’s Birthplace lies the residence of the Mozart Family. In 1773 the apartment at Getreidegasse Alley became too small for the Mozarts and the family moved to the other side of the River Salzach. Wolferl, as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was called by his friends and family, was a teenager at this time. In the extensive apartment in Markatplatz Square he enjoyed plenty of free space to further develop his talent. Here he composed ‘Re pastore’ KV 208, ‘La Finta Giardiniera’ KV 196 and ‘Idomeneo’ KV 266. In 1787 his father Leopold died. The resting place of Mozart’s father is located in the beautiful Sebastiansfriedhof Cemetery between Linzergasse Alley and Paris-Lodron-Strasse Street.
