In addition to the Salzburg Festival in summer and the Salzburg Easter Festival Herbert von Karajan founded the Salzburg Whitsun Festival in 1973. Those who do not have the time to indulge in classical music highlights in summer and at Easter will appreciate the opportunity to enjoy an exclusive festival in the city of Mozart.
Hugo von Hofmannsthal, founder of the Salzburg Festival, dreamt of festivals at Easter and Whitsun, an idea Herbert von Karajan turned into reality: Karajan held three orchestra concerts on the Saturday, Sunday and Monday of Whitsun. Only the world famous Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra performed under Karajan. After the death of the genius conductor other international orchestras were invited as well.

In 1997 the ‘Whitsun Concerts’ were transferred to Baden Baden paving the way for a fully-fledged festival in Salzburg. The Salzburg Whitsun Festival shares the same hallmarks of its sister summer and Easter festivals: a perfect trinity of exclusivity, brilliant artistic performances and unique venues.
