Between Salzburg Cathedral and Judengasse, in the middle of the two prince-archbishop residences, Salzburg’s most imposing square stretches out: Residenzplatz.
Already since the Middle Ages the bishop’s seat was located at the Residenzplatz. A place that has a lot to offer historically. Thus, the appearance of the present residence was created around the 16th century. The archbishops of Salzburg at that time had three large inner courtyards and about 180 rooms, which were to be considered their residence. Nevertheless, this was still not enough for Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau, so he planned a “New Residence” on the opposite side. The new building was to serve as a new residence and accommodation for guests, but a few years after its construction he decided to keep the Old Residence as his residence.

Eye-catcher between the New Residence and the Old Residence is one of the most important baroque monuments in Europe
The eye-catcher between the New Residence and the Old Residence is one of the most important Baroque monuments in Europe: the Residence Fountain. It is the center of the Residenzplatz. At the end of November, the small stalls and booths of the Salzburg Christmas Market line up around the fountain. Events of all kinds take place at Residenzplatz throughout the year: From rock and pop concerts, folk festivals and markets to live broadcasts of soccer matches, it’s all here.
The Altstadthotel Kasererbräu is located only about five minutes walk from the Residenzplatz. Send us now a non-binding booking request for your unforgettable stay in Salzburg.
